Advanced Heart Failure Registered Nurse (RN)
About The Position
Sentara Heart Hospital, located on the campus of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Advanced Heart Failure Specialty Unit. This is a full-time night shift position. New graduate nurses are welcome to apply and may be eligible for up to a $20,000 sign-on bonus. The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing a competent level of nursing care using the nursing process, which includes assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching, health promotion, and evaluation. Professional performance standards encompass ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice/nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN must possess clinical knowledge and skills to meet the standards required by specific clinical areas. The Advanced Heart Failure Unit is a 24-bed specialty unit providing high-acuity cardiac care to patients with severe heart failure, pre/post heart transplant, Total Artificial Heart, and pulmonary hypertension. Nurses work with advanced equipment such as mechanical circulatory support devices (LVAD, BiVAD) and telemetry monitors. The unit environment requires consistent 24-hour communication and intricate interdisciplinary teamwork. Nurses typically manage 3-4 patients based on acuity. The unit has received the ACCN Gold Beacon Award for excellence in patient care and fostering a positive work environment.
Requirements
- Associates Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
- Virginia RN License Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible.
- All Direct Care RN's required to have BLS within 90 days of hire.
- Critical Care/IMCU ACLS within 1 year of hire

Responsibilities
- Perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process.
- Utilize the standards of practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation).
- Adhere to the standards of professional performance (ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health).
- Provide high acuity cardiac care to patients with severe heart failure, pre/post heart transplant, the Total Artificial Heart, and pulmonary hypertension.
- Work with high tech equipment such as mechanical circulatory support including ventricular assist devices (LVAD, BiVAD) and telemetry monitors.
- Handle 3-4 patients on this unit based on acuity level.
- Ensure 24 hours consistent communication and intricate interdisciplinary teamwork skills.
