About The Position

Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and admission of individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures. Ensures that the patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. Interviews incoming patients or representatives and enters information required for admission into the computer database. Distributes appropriate information to ancillary departments. Participates in performance improvement and CQI activities.

Responsibilities

  • Accepting reservations for hospital services.
  • Accepting reservations from a physician’s office and pre-admitting these patients.
  • Preregistering patients for scheduled admissions and outpatient procedures, obtaining authorization, and verifying insurance eligibility.
  • Interviewing patients or their representative, where admission is unscheduled, for obtaining personal information or verifying information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information.
  • Obtaining signatures on Conditions of Admission and HIPPA Privacy Statement.
  • Providing information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, HIPAA, and visiting hours.
  • Distributing hospital-specific literature.
  • Ensuring that a patient’s valuables are taken home by a family member or secured in the safe.
  • Communicating appropriately and clearly to supervisor, nurse managers, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Consulting other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Collecting payments when previous arrangements have been made or a co-payment is required, recording payments, and forwarding to the Business Office personnel.
  • Knowing hospital policies and being familiar with hospital services that are available.
  • Referring the patient to the Business Office when financial arrangements need to be made.
  • Demonstrating an ability to be flexible, organized, and function well in stressful situations.
  • Treating patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensuring confidentiality of patients’ records.
  • Interacting professionally with patient/family and providing explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Maintaining a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Ensuring that documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Answering the telephone in a polite manner and communicating information to the appropriate personnel/family member.
  • Managing and operating equipment safely and correctly.
  • Checking and stocking supplies as needed.
  • Ensuring that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
  • Maintaining an excellent attendance record.
  • Wearing appropriate clothing for job functions.
  • Wearing ID badge.
  • Working at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, administration, and staff.
  • Representing the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
