About the position

The Adapted Physical Education Teacher - Itinerant is responsible for providing instructional and physical needs for students with disabilities in both general and special education settings. This role includes administering adapted physical education (APE) evaluations, preparing written reports, developing goals based on evaluation data, and monitoring student progress on individual education plan (IEP) goals. The teacher will implement classroom programs for instruction, self-help, and behavior management, enabling students to develop competencies and skills for successful societal functioning. Participation in admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee meetings is also required to assist with assessment data interpretation and goal setting for students according to district procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum requirements.
  • Teach the TEKS/SE as set by the Texas Education Agency and district curriculum.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques consistent with student needs.
  • Provide adapted physical education instruction to improve physical fitness and motor skills.
  • Administer evaluations to identify motor needs of individual students.
  • Assess student progress and provide input for IEP progress reports.
  • Create a learning environment appropriate to students' maturity and interests.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with policies and the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Participate in professional learning activities to improve job-related skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.
  • Valid Texas Physical Education Certification and Special Education Certification.
  • Certified Adapted Physical Education (CAPE) preferred.
  • Knowledge of APE assessments and their utilization.
  • Understanding of the Admission, Review and Dismissal process and Individual Education Plans.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in clinical teaching or approved internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with special education curriculum and instruction.
  • Familiarity with technology in teaching and learning processes.
