About the position

The Actuarial Data Scientist role at American Family Insurance is part of the Actuarial Tools & Modeling team, focusing on developing data-driven solutions for insurance pricing. The position involves applying statistical, mathematical, and predictive modeling skills to manage complex data, collaborating with various teams to enhance model performance, and implementing models into production while monitoring market trends.

Responsibilities

  • Optimize model capabilities and collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure models meet business needs.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of existing models and lead enhancement efforts.
  • Perform analysis of emerging experience and monitor marketplace trends.
  • Support the development of a modeling framework.
  • Build and test models, investigating areas for future improvement with minimal guidance.
  • Regularly communicate research findings and analysis to management.
  • Work with cross-functional areas on specific initiatives.
  • Prepare state filing model support and assist on filing objections.
  • Act as a mentor for less experienced actuaries/data scientists and interns.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support, or service.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively.
  • Proficiency in programming languages suitable for database access, scripting, and statistical analysis.
  • Preferred proficiency in SQL and Python.
  • Familiarity with version control for software development.
  • Experience using large amounts of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.
  • Experience formulating, analyzing, and solving problems on massive datasets.
  • Solid knowledge of managing data to scale using data summarization, query, and analysis software and tools.
  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Sciences, Actuarial Science, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: 2 or more actuarial exams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three or more years of relevant actuarial and modeling experience.
