About the position

The Actuarial Associate I position at American Equity is designed for individuals participating in the Actuarial Student Program (ASP), which focuses on developing essential actuarial, technical, management, communication, and leadership skills. This role involves working on a hybrid schedule in West Des Moines, IA, and offers opportunities to rotate through various functional areas within the actuarial department, gaining experience in product development, pricing, reinsurance, and more. Participants are expected to progress through the Society of Actuaries' exams while receiving support and mentorship throughout their career development.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain existing actuarial models/tools and assist with troubleshooting.
  • Participate in ad hoc projects such as automation initiatives and modeling updates.
  • Work with IT to integrate inforce data into actuarial environments.
  • Develop and maintain validation tools to verify model results.
  • Create and maintain proper documentation for actuarial processes.
  • Support the group's actuarial initiatives and ongoing business needs.
  • Complete assigned projects with impactful outputs.
  • Build relationships across different business units and actuarial functions.
  • Collaborate with actuarial team members and receive mentorship from senior members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
  • At least two actuarial exams completed.
  • Experience using SQL, RStudio, Python, and VBA preferred.
  • Commitment to continuing the actuarial exam process to obtain ASA Certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to numeric and other detail.
  • Effective organization and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with actuarial and data science software and technologies such as MG-ALFA, Python, R, and Tableau.
