About the position

The Activity Assistant role is focused on providing engaging recreational and therapeutic activities for residents in a long-term care facility. This position is essential for enhancing the quality of life for seniors, particularly in assisted living and nursing home settings, by fostering a supportive environment that promotes social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and overall well-being.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and implement a variety of recreational activities tailored to the interests and abilities of residents.
  • Assist in conducting individual and group activities that promote physical, emotional, and social engagement.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and other caregivers to ensure activities align with residents' care plans.
  • Communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff to encourage participation and gather feedback on activities.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming environment during all activities, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Document participation levels and resident feedback to assess the effectiveness of programs.
  • Support residents with dementia care by providing specialized activities that cater to their needs.
  • Participate in training sessions related to recreational therapy and senior care best practices.

Requirements

  • Experience or education in long-term care, recreational therapy, social work, or related fields is preferred.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with seniors and their families.
  • A genuine interest in senior care, particularly within assisted living or nursing home environments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude when interacting with residents.
  • Knowledge of dementia care practices is a plus.
  • Flexibility to adapt activities based on resident preferences and needs.
