About The Position

The Accountant position involves analyzing data to guide financial business decisions, maintaining accurate job cost projections by monitoring costs, preparing cost analysis schedules, and researching regulatory, tax, and legal topics. The role also includes researching government grants and funding opportunities, monitoring General Ledger balances and transactions, performing bank reconciliations, recording journal entries, and maintaining general plant records. Additionally, the Accountant will handle vehicle-related duties such as tag renewals and tax preparation, assist with annual reports and questionnaires, manage outstanding checks, and prepare monthly sales & use taxes. The position also requires providing backup for other accounting roles and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required.
  • Experience will be based on years of accounting experience, including activities emphasizing general ledger and reconciliation procedures.
  • Must possess a sound understanding of accounting principles, general office procedures, recordkeeping, and the use of business machines.
  • Must have a working knowledge of accounting functions and applications.
  • Must be able to type, calculate, use computers and applicable software, and operate other office machines quickly and accurately to complete job activities promptly.
  • Must possess word processing and spreadsheet skills.
  • Must be able to read and interpret technical regulatory manuals and apply sound accounting principles to job activities.
  • Must be able to perform tedious visual activities for extended periods.
  • Must be willing and able to attend job-related training sessions to remain current in job knowledge.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with an emphasis on correct grammar.
  • Must exhibit leadership qualities and possess the ability to prioritize.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in preparing financial statements is considered a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze data to guide financial business decisions.
  • Maintain accurate job cost projections by consistently monitoring record unit costs, direct labor values, all overhead costs, and other inputs.
  • Prepare cost analysis schedules as needed.
  • Research regulatory, tax, legal, or other related topics.
  • Research government grants and other funding opportunities as assigned.
  • Monitor General Ledger balances and transactions related to prepaid expenses, deferred debits, interest accrual, short-term & long-term debt, and general plant accounts.
  • Perform bank reconciliation processes and reconcile general ledger balances with bank statements monthly.
  • Record recurring monthly journal entries and prepare vouchers.
  • Maintain general plant records and inventory of general plant assets, including preparation of retirement vouchers.
  • Key monthly transportation-related entries and check audit reports to ensure they are correctly keyed.
  • Perform vehicle-related duties, including tag renewals, vehicle additions/deletions, preparing ad valorem taxes, ordering new and replacement fuel cards, assigning PINs, preparing annual Heavy-Duty Tax, and filling out State Tag Affidavits.
  • Assist the accounting department with various projects as needed, such as annual reports, questionnaires, and studies.
  • Maintain the list and liquidate outstanding checks to the state.
  • Assist in the preparation of other monthly reports.
  • Provide Broadband Accounting Specialist, Sr. Accounts Payable Clerk, and Plant Accounting Technician backup.
  • Prepare monthly sales & use taxes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
