About the position

The Private Capital Accountant at Northern Trust is responsible for providing comprehensive administration, financial accounting, and investor reporting services for private equity funds. This role involves working independently on complex projects, serving as a liaison for day-to-day queries, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures while maintaining strong client relationships. The position requires a blend of technical expertise and excellent communication skills to manage high-profile transactions and deliver accurate financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and cultivate working relationships with clients, external legal and accounting firms, and internal partners.
  • Carry out complex transactions surrounding all Private Equity Fund activity, including capital calls, distributions, investment purchases, and carried interest calculations.
  • Act as the first point of reference for day-to-day queries while performing review, verification, accounting, and audit processes accurately.
  • Search for ways to eliminate recurring problems and ensure all tasks are completed according to client-specific administration and service level agreements.
  • Prepare, validate, and assist in the preparation of Private Equity accounts, financial statements, and specific client reporting.
  • Analyze and ensure appropriate reconciliations surrounding Private Equity investment activity and data are completed accurately and timely.
  • Ensure all financial reporting to clients and investors is reviewed and validated for accuracy prior to dissemination.
  • Utilize department systems to complete daily and periodic functions, including Investran and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Lead or participate in implementing new technology and efficiency initiatives as needed.

Requirements

  • 2-3+ years of staff accounting experience and/or private equity fund accounting/administration experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years client servicing or related experience.
  • Formal education in accounting and/or related business degree.
  • Strong understanding of the complexities of the private equity markets through past experience.
  • Experience with Investran and MS Suite of Systems (Excel/Access/Word) at an intermediate/advanced level.
