About the position

The City of Phoenix is seeking an Accountant IV in the Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) Division of the Finance Department. This supervisory role involves overseeing financial reporting, managing the external audit process, and ensuring compliance with governmental accounting standards. The Accountant IV will be responsible for preparing financial statements, coordinating annual financial reports, and providing technical guidance on complex financial matters. Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review financial statements and schedules for governmental and enterprise funds.
  • Oversee the external audit process for multiple annual reports, including the City's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).
  • Assist in implementing Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements.
  • Prepare, review, and approve various journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Perform reconciliations of general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Respond to department requests and provide technical guidance on financial matters.
  • Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal control systems.
  • Supervise and review the work of multiple professional accountants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, public administration, or a related field.
  • Five years of professional accounting experience, with at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with SAP ERP or similar large ERP systems.
  • Strong writing, research, and communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in accounting, business, or public administration.
  • CPA certification.
  • Experience in governmental accounting and finance.
  • Experience compiling financial statements using budgetary and accrual basis accounting.
  • Experience working with auditors.
