About The Position

This role involves preparing financial data and reports, performing reconciliations, analyzing accounts, and supporting the preparation of financial statements. The accountant will handle various accounting tasks related to premiums, commissions, taxes, and reporting, assist with audits and examinations, and support payment and commission processing. The position also involves contributing to special projects, process improvement, and serving as a backup for other accounting functions, including training junior staff.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in accounting, preferably within P&C insurance
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify issues, analyze root causes, and resolve discrepancies
  • Collaborative team player with a customer-service mindset

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Familiarity with insurance accounting, statutory reporting, or regulatory filings
  • Experience supporting audits and regulatory examinations
  • AIAF designation (or progress toward designation) preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Continuous improvement mindset with focus on process efficiency
  • Public accounting experience a plus but not a requirement

Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly financial data and reports
  • Perform reconciliations of bank accounts, general ledger accounts, and subsidiary ledgers
  • Analyze accounts and investigate discrepancies; recommend and implement corrective actions
  • Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Perform accounting tasks related to premiums, commissions, taxes (including premium tax and sales/use tax), and abandoned property
  • Coordinate and process 1099 reporting
  • Assist with annual audits and state examinations, including preparation of supporting documentation
  • Support payment processing and banking transactions
  • Assist with commission processing, including monthly and annual profit-sharing calculations
  • Identify transactions subject to sales and use tax and ensure proper reporting
  • Provide support on special projects and process improvement initiatives
  • Serve as backup for other accounting functions and assist in training junior staff
