About the position

The position involves performing a variety of accounting, fiscal analysis, and auditing tasks under general direction. The role includes the preparation, maintenance, and analysis of County/Department fiscal records and financial transactions. The incumbent will learn County fiscal policies, procedures, and computerized fiscal management, payroll, and tax systems. The position is divided into two levels: Accountant I, which is an entry-level position, and Accountant II, which is an experienced journey level. The Accountant I performs basic accounting work while learning the systems, whereas the Accountant II handles more complex tasks and may provide direction to fiscal support staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounting work in the establishment and maintenance of County fiscal records.
  • Maintain a variety of ledgers and journals.
  • Review fiscal records to ensure proper disbursement of funds.
  • Maintain and balance revenue information.
  • Oversee employee insurance administration.
  • Audit financial records and prepare information for final audits.
  • Prepare a variety of financial reports and statements.
  • Assist with the development and control of budget information.
  • Oversee and coordinate payroll functions.
  • Perform special financial analysis assignments.
  • Coordinate balancing of County cash accounts with banks and other responsible County departments.
  • Coordinate posting of journal entries.
  • Provide work direction, coordination, and training for fiscal support staff.
  • Serve as a liaison with other government agencies, auditors, and the public.
  • Provide first line contact with contract auditors, preparing and providing documentation for the annual audit.
  • Perform verification of draft financial audit reports.
  • Perform adjusting entries as requested in audit reports.
  • Provide other County staff with information regarding fiscal processes and procedures.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to successful completion of courses required for a major in accounting at an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Successful completion of a professional accounting curriculum which included courses in elementary and advanced accounting, auditing, cost accounting, and business law.
  • For Accountant I: Four years of experience as an Accounting Technician or in an equivalent technical fiscal support position may be substituted for the required education.
  • For Accountant II: Two years of increasingly responsible fiscal management experience comparable to that of an Accountant I with San Benito County.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California Drivers License.
  • May be required to pass a fingerprint/background investigation.
