About the position

The Academic Tutor position at Amber Charter Schools is a part-time role for the 2025-2026 school year, focused on supporting students in becoming independent learners and achieving their academic goals. Tutors will provide individual and group tutoring across various programs, working closely with teachers and maintaining records on student progress. The role emphasizes fostering positive attitudes towards learning and developing essential study skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic assistance to assigned students, either in a group or individually.
  • Establish liaison with the teacher and work under the teacher's direction to assist the student.
  • Maintain records on each student being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
  • Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  • Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and improving academic capabilities.
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
  • Serve as a role model for students.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong math and reading skills.
  • Ability to work 4 hours daily Monday - Friday, typically from 10AM-2PM.
  • Comfort with remote learning systems (e.g. Google Classroom, online curriculum platforms).
  • Strong command of all Microsoft Office and Google Suite programs.
  • Ability to engage children in learning and interface with parents/caregivers.
  • Commitment to create and maintain a safe and responsive learning environment.
  • Capacity to develop strong relationships based on trust, respect, effective communication, and common goals.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple obligations and initiatives, strong attention to detail, and excellent time management.
  • Completion and pass pre-employment Fingerprinting and Reference check process.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 1 year experience teaching, tutoring, counseling, and/or interaction with children.
  • New York State Teacher Assistant Certification.
  • Ability to speak, write, and understand Spanish fluently.
