About the position

The individual will work one-on-one with Rivier students to assist them with academic skills, writing assignments, and course content knowledge. Academic Support Consultants work with a range of students from first-year students through the graduate level, and some students opt to attend weekly sessions, working with the same Consultant each week. Academic Support Consultants will work with students across all disciplines and programs during drop-in hours and reserved appointment times in person and through virtual conferencing.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with individual students who have opted for drop-in or regular support in skills such as time management, organization, study skills, learning strategies, and writing skills.
  • Work with all levels of student writing related to any course offered on campus.
  • Review written assignments to determine a student's individual needs and appropriate area of focus for the tutorial session.
  • Assist the student in identifying strengths and overcoming difficulties in his/her approach to assignments.
  • Help the student brainstorm, organize, and develop ideas to address various aspects of a written assignment.
  • Move the student toward independence in assignments by fostering both competence and confidence.
  • Help the student proofread and check citations.
  • Assist students with time management and create a plan for completing assignments.
  • Occasionally act as an intermediary to clarify assignment requirements, conferring directly with the professor if necessary.
  • Continue professional development through attending and presenting at conferences; reading professional journals and books, publishing educational materials, articles, or books; and membership in professional organizations.
  • Be informed of campus agencies to help students avail themselves of appropriate services and events.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a specific subject area related to the position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to all levels of students, as well as faculty and staff.
  • Relevant experience with tutoring and/or teaching.
  • Strong writing and research skills, including knowledge and experience in developing academic writing skills on a graduate level.
  • Familiarity with APA, MLA, and Chicago styles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant field preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience in academic support and student success programs.
  • Experience with educational technology such as TutorTrac, Zoom conferencing, VoiceThread, and Canvas.
