About the position

The Academic Success Coach/Career Advising Specialist at Catawba College is responsible for providing comprehensive advising and mentorship to students, particularly focusing on the Ketner School of Business. This role involves crafting and executing programs that support students in achieving their academic and career goals, while also addressing their personal and social needs. The position emphasizes collaboration with students, families, faculty, and administrators to ensure a smooth transition and ongoing support throughout the students' academic journey.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the touch-point person to assist new students and their families in completing necessary steps for a smooth transition to campus.
  • Cross train with Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Affairs, and Athletics to serve newly enrolled first-year students.
  • Assist in Catawba's First Year Seminar and Orientation programs tailored to first-year students' needs.
  • Promote a sense of belonging and connection for first-year students through activities and events.
  • Develop and disseminate communication materials enhancing services for first-year students.
  • Collaborate with campus partners including faculty, athletics, and student affairs.
  • Design and lead Student Success seminars on various topics relevant to first-year students.
  • Support the academic success of first-year students by monitoring attendance and performance.
  • Provide developmental advising that supports students in all aspects of their lives.
  • Coordinate academic support services including advising and tutoring.
  • Advise on academic scheduling, majors, and general College policies.
  • Provide systematic support for undecided/undeclared students and those on Academic Probation.
  • Train and manage peer academic support leaders for tutoring services.
  • Maintain confidential records and prepare reports related to advising functions.
  • Attend professional development training aligned with departmental goals.
  • Participate in Admissions and Athletic Recruitment events.

Requirements

  • Master's degree preferred but not required.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and develop as an advising professional.
  • Knowledge of career development theories and job search strategies.
  • Proficiency in using career services software and databases for tracking student data.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population.
  • Ability to relate well to a variety of audiences including parents, students, and faculty.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media platforms.

Nice-to-haves
