About the position

The Instructional Assistant for Special Education is responsible for supporting teachers in the instruction and management of students with disabilities in a PreK-12 setting. This role involves preparing instructional materials, assisting in the implementation of educational programs, and providing support to students to help them succeed in their learning environment.

Responsibilities

• Assists resource and regular classroom teachers in preparing instructional materials for classroom use.
• Assists resource and regular classroom teachers in the instructional program as scheduled.
• Becomes proficient in operating and maintaining equipment such as a laminating machine and copier.
• Assists teachers in establishing objectives and developing a program of instruction that meets individual student needs.
• Assists teachers in developing instructional activities consistent with local and state curriculum guides.
• Implements activities using various techniques to meet instructional objectives.
• Assists students with disabilities in transitioning and manipulating the school environment, including lifting and carrying as needed.
• Supports students with disabilities in developing self-help skills.
• Maintains confidentiality of student information.
• Exhibits positive human relations skills.
• Adheres to school system rules and local board policy.
• Demonstrates professionalism and ethics in interactions with all stakeholders.
• Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
• Attends all required meetings and professional training sessions.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

• Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalent for Title I and Special Education.
• Must hold an Associates Degree or have completed a minimum of 48 semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or have successfully completed the Alabama State Board of Education approved WORKKEYS test.
