About the position

The purpose of this job is to provide instruction, leadership, and supervision to middle school students participating in the sports program. The coach will conduct practices that emphasize teamwork, skill development, and the importance of learning rules and strategies to enhance student-athlete improvement. Additionally, the coach will engage in academic monitoring with teachers and counselors to ensure student-athletes attend required study halls. Supervision of student-athletes will be required before, during, and after practices and contests, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times. The coach will also be responsible for the care and inventory of athletic equipment, maintaining ethical conduct during practices and contests, and completing all necessary paperwork. The role includes promoting student-athlete accomplishments both academically and athletically, and working closely with the Principal to develop a solid sports program.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct practices emphasizing teamwork, skill development, and student-athlete improvement.
  • Engage in academic monitoring with teachers and counselors, ensuring student-athletes attend study hall.
  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and contests.
  • Assume responsibility for the care and inventory of athletic equipment and facilities.
  • Conduct oneself in an ethical manner during practices and contests, exemplifying high standards of sportsmanship.
  • Complete all required paperwork including rosters, physicals, insurance forms, and parent consent forms.
  • Work with the Principal to provide a solid sports program.
  • Continue professional growth through clinics and professional publications.
  • Oversee player development, fundraising, and promotion of the sport.
  • Supervise an effective assistant coach and manage all aspects of the program.
  • Promote student-athlete accomplishments academically and athletically.

Requirements

  • Must possess a four-year college degree and be contracted by the KCMSD Board of Education as a full or part-time teacher.
  • 1-3 years of coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of the particular sport's philosophy and coaching techniques.
  • Must successfully complete the MSHSAA/NFHS Coaching Principles Course and Sports First Aid Courses.
  • Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and knowledge of collegiate eligibility center regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Employed as a teacher or administrator in the school where the coaching position is applied for.
