About the position

The purpose of this job is to provide instruction, leadership, and supervision to middle school students participating in the sports program. The coach will conduct practices that emphasize teamwork, skill development, and the learning of rules and strategies, while also focusing on the improvement of student-athletes. The role involves engaging with academic staff to monitor student-athletes' academic performance and ensuring their attendance at required study halls. Supervision of student-athletes is crucial, as the coach will be responsible for their safety and well-being before, during, and after practices and contests. This includes being present at all practices and games, ensuring that all student-athletes leave safely after events. The coach will also be responsible for the care and inventory of athletic equipment, maintaining ethical conduct during practices and contests, and completing all necessary paperwork related to the program. Additionally, the coach will work closely with the Principal to develop a solid sports program and will be expected to continue their professional growth through clinics and publications. The role includes responsibilities for player development, fundraising, promotion of the sport, and supervision of assistant coaches. The coach will also promote the academic and athletic accomplishments of student-athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct practices emphasizing teamwork, skill development, and student-athlete improvement.
  • Engage in academic monitoring with teachers and counselors, ensuring student-athletes attend study hall.
  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and contests.
  • Assume responsibility for the care and inventory of athletic equipment and facilities.
  • Conduct oneself in an ethical manner during practices and contests, exemplifying high standards of sportsmanship.
  • Complete all required paperwork including rosters, physicals, and consent forms.
  • Collaborate with the Principal to provide a solid sports program.
  • Continue professional growth through clinics and publications.
  • Oversee player development, fundraising, and promotion of the sport.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and ensure effective program management.
  • Promote student-athletes' academic and athletic accomplishments.

Requirements

  • Must possess a four-year college degree and be contracted by the KCMSD Board of Education as a full or part-time teacher.
  • 1-3 years of coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of the particular sport's philosophy and coaching techniques.
  • Must successfully complete the MSHSAA/NFHS Coaching Principles Course and Sports First Aid Courses.
  • Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and knowledge of collegiate eligibility center regulations.
