About The Position

Highline Academy is seeking a dedicated and caring 1st Grade Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year at the Northeast Campus. Reporting directly to the campus principal, teachers are central to fulfilling the mission of fostering a diverse community of youths and adults striving together for academic, personal, and civic excellence. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the whole child, possess strong lesson planning and classroom management skills, and be an excellent collaborator with colleagues and families. We are looking for individuals with strong communication skills, a commitment to making a difference for each child, and a growth mindset. The position involves a 195-day work year, including 177 student contact days and professional development/parent conference days. Teachers are expected to be on campus from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm on most days, and until 4:30 pm on Fridays with early release for students. Two weeks of professional development are held each summer before school begins. Highline Academy is committed to inclusive excellence, serving a diverse student population from various backgrounds and speaking multiple languages. The school offers a liberal arts education, including Art, Music, Spanish, and P.E., with high expectations for all learners and a robust intervention program. Highline is a fully inclusive organization for students with special needs and implements a character education program called Reach, focusing on responsibility, empowerment, aspiration, citizenship, and honesty. Requirements

  • Valid teaching credential appropriate to their teaching assignment
  • Teaching experience appropriate to the assignment
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the Highline mission
  • Highly qualified per The Every Student Succeeds (ESSA) specifications
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to walk quickly, bend, kneel, crouch, sit, stand, grab or hold with one or both hands.
  • Ability to lift up to 40lbs without difficulty
  • Ability to maintain appropriate demeanor and professional classroom behavior when working with children and adults
  • Ability to sit for extended periods during group training

  • Use data to monitor student learning, make decisions about grouping, and determine next steps in lesson planning.
  • Meet in data teams to reflect upon student progress and support other teachers in interpreting their data.
  • Meet at least weekly with their team to co-plan lessons and units.
  • Meet with special education or interventionist teachers to further support all students.
  • Take responsibility for planning and instruction for a performance group of students in language arts and math.
  • Teach assigned classes, groups, or programs.
  • Provide Teaching Assistants with appropriate assignments, guidance, and support.
  • Set the tone and community expectations for students.
  • Build positive relationships with students and hold them to high expectations.
  • Manage classes with positive proactive systems and strong rituals and routines.
  • Seek out information and support from other staff if a student is not doing well behaviorally or academically.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for student-family communication.
  • Set up a website and/or send home a regular newsletter about classwork.
  • Engage parents through volunteer opportunities or class events.
  • Build relationships with families through phone calls and meetings.
  • Ensure all families attend student conferences.
  • Attend at least three evening or weekend events per year.
  • Help plan and lead at least one event for families during the year.
  • Attend all professional development as assigned by their principal.
  • Participate as a member of at least one network, school, board, or parent group committee.
